Walgreens, NUL bringing health screenings to cities
August 7th 2006Walgreens has joined forces with the National Urban League (NUL) to launch the NUL/Walgreens Wellness Tour. The tour features a customized traveling education and health-screening vehicle, which will appear at select NUL affiliates in key urban markets as part of a 12-month national campaign.
CVS offers on-line photo processing with one-hour pickup
August 7th 2006CVS/pharmacy announced that its CVS Photo Center is offering consumers the option of on-line photo processing with one-hour, in-store pickup. Features of the photo center at www.cvsphotocenter.com include: free on-line storage and sharing options, editing techniques and color-correction options, images that can be uploaded from any Internet-connected computer, and personalized photo gifts.
The new anti-meth law: Truth and consequences
August 7th 2006Retailers who fail to comply with a new federal law on methamphetamine can be fined up to $25,000 and jailed for up to two years. Furthermore, if a state or local requirement conflicts with the federal requirement, retailers must comply with the most stringent version. So warned Kevin N. Nicholson, R.Ph., J.D., VP-pharmacy regulatory affairs, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, at the association's Marketplace Conference, held in San Diego recently.
Walgreens recruits employees with disabilities
July 17th 2006Walgreens has launched an initiative to hire people with disabilities at its new distribution center in Anderson, S.C., and is recruiting through a new, specially designed Web site. Walgreensoutreach.com describes jobs available at the Walgreens distribution center and is designed to be accessible by people with sensory, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
Walgreens to acquire Medmark specialty pharmacy
July 10th 2006Walgreens announced that it has agreed to acquire Pittsburgh-based Medmark Specialty Pharmacy Solutions. Medmark is a leader in specialty pharmacy services and care, including injectables, infusibles, and advanced oral medications to patients with unique or chronic medication needs for conditions such as hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, HIV, infertility, hemophilia, organ transplants, and cancer.

June 19th 2006A letter from Walgreens' head of acquisitions asking whether Part D has them ready to sell out has outraged some independent pharmacy owners. They believe the chain's own pharmacy benefit manager is one reason they're being hurt financially by the Medicare drug benefit.
Walgreens offers advice on hurricane preparedness
May 15th 2006Walgreens is offering the following suggestions to help pharmacypatients in the event of a hurricane evacuation: evacuate to a safelocation and refill your medication at a pharmacy there; take awaterproof bag with your current medication, even if the bottle isempty-the information on the label will help the pharmacistrefill your medicine once you arrive at your destination; keep awritten record of your current prescriptions, dosage, and doctor'scontact information in your valuable papers file, especially if youare taking several Rx drugs. Nevada board writes Canadian pharmacy regs
May 1st 2006The Nevada pharmacy board unanimously approved regulations topermit residents to purchase drugs from Canadian mail-orderpharmacies. Board-approved Canadian pharmacies can fill and mailscripts for drugs that are approved by the FDA and Health Canadaand that are drawn from the pharmacy's on-site inventory system.
Walgreens sued for 'failure to warn' in pregnancy case
April 24th 2006Erin Cutler, a Marion County woman who is already suing Walgreensafter allegedly finding demeaning comments attached to herprescriptions in the section reserved for patient information, hasadded a "failure-to-warn" count to the lawsuit. Cutler claims thata Walgreens pharmacy did not warn her that her bipolar medicationdecreases the effectiveness of her birth control.
Walgreens offers help on Medicare drug benefit
April 24th 2006Walgreens is offering one-on-one Medicare drug benefit assistanceevery Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. through May 15 at1,000 select locations. Pharmacy staff will explain how the newprogram works, provide information on different plans, and reviewthe factors that should be considered in order to make a goodselection.
XLHealth and CVS offering medication advice

CVS offers seniors help to meet Part D deadline
April 10th 2006As the May 15 deadline approaches for Medicare Part D enrollment, CVS is continuing its efforts to educate and inform seniors about the new prescription drug benefit plan. Medicare Tuesdays returns to CVS pharmacies from April 11 to May 9, featuring a staff member who will answer questions and help patients review available drug benefit plans.
CVS reaches agreement on tobacco sales
March 27th 2006CVS Corp. has reached an agreement with 42 states and the District of Columbia by promising to strengthen practices that keep minors from buying tobacco products. Under the voluntary settlement, the pharmacy chain agreed to check the identities of customers who attempt to purchase tobacco products if they look younger than 27.
Walgreens sued for comment on prescription
March 27th 2006A Palm Beach, Fla., woman is suing Walgreens on grounds that when she picked up a prescription for the sleep aid Ambien (zolpidem, Sanofi-Aventis), she found a message attached in the section reserved for patient information that said "Crazy!" The patient, Janey Karp, said the prescription also said, "She's really a psycho! Do not say her name too loud, never mention her meds by names, and try to talk to her when..." The information continued on to another page, which was not attached. Karp is suing for defamation, negligent supervision, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
SEC looking at CVS for stuffed animal barter transaction
March 20th 2006CVS has reported that the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission has started an informal inquiry into how it accounted for a barter transaction in 2000 that involved stuffed animals. The company's audit committee has determined that accounting for the 2000 transaction was incorrect, CVS said in a filing with the SEC.
CVS recognizes National Patient Safety Awareness Week
March 13th 2006CVS announced that it will take part in National Patient Safety Awareness Week, which takes place this year from March 5-11. The company will broadcast prescription safety tips for customers through its in-store radio network during the week of the campaign.
Lawsuit filed against Walgreens for Rx error
February 27th 2006Charfoos & Christensen has filed a lawsuit against Walgreens on behalf of Michael Wells in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan. Attorney Douglas Peters of Charfoos & Chistensen told Drug Topics that Wells' surgeon prescribed the antibiotic Duricef (cefadroxil/cefadroxil hemihydrate, Warner Chilcott) to prevent the development of postsurgical wound infection.
Walgreens to acquire CV Medical Solutions
February 27th 2006Walgreens Home Care has agreed to acquire Canadian Valley Medical Solutions. Based in Oklahoma City, CV Medical Solutions is an accredited provider of home infusion therapy, respiratory services including home oxygen, customized mobility and seating products, and home medical equipment.
Tampered juice bottles found at CVS
February 20th 2006Bottles of fruit juice that appeared to be tampered with were found at a CVS store near where dozens of churchgoers in Connecticut recently fell ill. The bottles contained several different brands and types of juice and were found during an inventory check, according to police.
WHI adds Medicine Shoppe, Rite Aid to Advantage90 network
February 13th 2006Walgreens Health Initiatives (WHI), the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) subsidiary of Walgreen Co., has added Medicine Shoppe and Rite Aid to its Advantage90 network. Of the 56,000 pharmacies in the WHI network, more than 31,000 participate in the Advantage90 network.
