Ethan Melillo, PharmD, CDOE, senior manager of Integrated Health at L’Oréal, provides some of his favorite recommendations to help with irritated skin.
During the winter when temperatures drop and humidity decreases, it is difficult for the skin to retain moisture. This can lead to dry and itchy skin, and can exacerbate existing skin conditions like eczema and rosacea. Research has shown that rates of atopic skin exacerbation—which is characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin—is highest in the winter.1 However, there are many products available that can help keep the skin healthy through the colder months.
At the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2024 Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition, held December 8 to 12 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Drug Topics sat down with Ethan Melillo, PharmD, CDOE, senior manager of Integrated Health at L’Oréal, to discuss product recommendations for the most common winter skin concerns and counseling pearls that pharmacists can share with patients when it comes to taking care of their skin during winter months.
“Some counseling pearls, I think definitely making sure [patients] wear sunscreen,” Melillo said. “That’s the one thing that we always forget. We don’t see the sun, it’s not there. One of my favorite [sunscreens] is the La Roche-Posay mineral sunscreen. I think it’s really great, especially because they just came out with some tinted ones. A lot of times with mineral sunscreens, they can cause white cast, especially in darker skin tones. It’s an awesome line that they have come out with to really help patients with darker skin tones.”
