Rite Aid Pharmacist’s Exploration of Immunization, Clinical Programming

Adam J. James, PharmD, joined Drug Topics to discuss his career journey as a chain pharmacist.

Due to his early interests in both mathematics and medicine, Adam J. James’ career aspirations led him into choosing a professional path within the pharmacy industry. After receiving his pharmacy degree from Duquesne University and serving as a staff pharmacist at Rite Aid, he was promoted to a medical team focusing on immunization and clinical programming.

“What I do in that role is I primarily focus on making Rite Aid’s immunization program successful. To do this, I maintain policies and procedures for our immunization program, create resources, best practices, continuing education courses all to help educate our pharmacists so that they're up to date on vaccine recommendations and how to talk to customers about vaccines,” said James.

He has been grateful for the opportunities to climb the ranks within his industry and become a meaningful asset for the delivery of patient care. While being a necessary and contributing team player is ideal in his day-to-day work, what’s ultimately most rewarding to James is being able to care for patients while also educating fellow pharmacists.

“It's great to have the privilege to have such a large impact over so many pharmacists and so many patients and, like I mentioned previously, I get to educate all our pharmacists. So, when a recommendation changes, or a new vaccine is available, or if there's a best practice out there that I can share, I'm able to get that information to all the pharmacists at our over 1300 locations,” he continued.
