U.S. pharmacists filled more than 270 million prescriptions in the first three months of the Medicare Part D drug benefit, according to CMS. During March, R.Ph.s filled an average of three million Part D scripts every day. By mid-April, 8.1 million Medicare beneficiaries had signed up for a stand-alone drug plan and about one million had enrolled in a Medicare Advantage drug plan. A total of 30 million Medicare beneficiaries were receiving some sort of Rx drug benefit, including federal retirees, veterans, and those covered by employer plans.
