Pharmacists busier than ever and in demand
Not only more female but also more male pharmacists are practicing part-time. On top of that, more than 40% of male pharmacists are approaching retirement or are over the age of 55. These factors combined spell more trouble ahead for the profession in terms of pharmacist supply and demand. These findings are based on a new National Pharmacist Workforce Study of 1,470 pharmacists, funded by the Pharmacy Manpower Project. The study also found that community pharmacists' workload has intensified, with 33% of community R.Ph.s dispensing more than 150 prescriptions a day in 2004, versus 22% in 2000.
