The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), established by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, recently named an executive director and is seeking public input on healthcare research priorities.

Once Selby has filled key personnel positions at PCORI, the staffers will begin to work on healthcare research priorities with such stakeholders as patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, physicians, health plans, researchers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and pharmacists. The organization will consistently seek public input as well.

PCORI will coordinate closely with the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to focus on patient-centered research.

"This is rethinking research as a national enterprise of the citizenry. It makes researchers answer practical questions and is a transition [from much of the research to date]," Selby said.
