NCPA names Horton pharmacist of the year
Ed Horton, RPh, owner of Tanglewood Pharmacy and Medical Supplies in Stephenville, Texas, has been named the 2013 National Community Pharmacists Association’s (NCPA) Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year.
Ed Horton, RPh, owner of Tanglewood Pharmacy and Medical Supplies in Stephenville, Texas, has been named the 2013 National Community Pharmacists Association’s (NCPA) Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year.
The award recognizes an independent pharmacist for leadership and commitment to community. It is sponsored by Upsher-Smith Laboratories and was presented Sunday during the 115th Annual NCPA Convention and Trade Exposition in Orlando.
“In addition to running a highly successful and award-winning pharmacy, Ed has consistently demonstrated strong leadership on behalf of local, state and national associations as a founding member of the Alliance of Independent Pharmacists of Texas and in his assistance to pharmacy students,” said NCPA President Donnie Calhoun.
Horton was voted best pharmacist in 2002 by readers of the Stephenville Empire Tribune. And his pharmacy has been voted the best pharmacy in Erath County every year since 1997.

Steve Adkins, PharmD, owner of Health Park Pharmacy in Raleigh, N.C., received the 2013 NCPA Outstanding Adherence Practitioner Award. “Steve is passionate about providing adherence services that make a difference in the lives of his patients,” Calhoun said. “We hope his example is embraced by his colleagues looking to improve in this area and by pharmacy students entering the workforce.”
Ashley Ellis, a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Mississippi, received the 2013 NCPA Outstanding Adherence Educator Award. “In her short time in academia, Ashley already has made her mark by helping pharmacy students be more effective in their use of adherence programs such as MTM,” Calhoun said. “If the future success of medication adherence rests in the hands of people like Ashley, the future looks very bright.”
Phil LaFoy, RPh, owner and president of Tennessee’s Blount Discount Pharmacy, was named winner of the 2013 NCPA Prescription Drug Safety Award; Janet Kusler, RPh, owner of Kusler’s Pharmacy and Matrx LTC Pharmacy in Snohomish, Wash., was named 2013 National Preceptor of the Year; Mike James, owner of two pharmacies in Raleigh, N.C., received the 2013 John W. Dargavel Medal; and I.R. Patel, RPh, received the NARD Ownership Award.
