Medco Health Solutions reached a tentative agreement to pay $163 million to settle federal fraud charges stemming from two whistle-blower suits filed by pharmacists against the giant PBM. Still slated for trial in June, the Medco complaint was filed in December 2003 by U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan, who said that the tentative settlement covers financial terms but other matters are yet to be resolved. He added, "As we stated at the time the complaint was filed, pressure by an employer to reduce costs and increase profits must never be allowed to coerce pharmacists into ignoring their duties to patients."
