The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) recently released its 5 tips to help children and their parents stay educated on asthma peak month.
Every year in September—known as asthma peak month—health care providers see an uptick in asthma-related issues among children. Whether due to the change in weather or their return to the classroom, September almost always sees an increase in asthma attacks and hospitalizations.
“September is known as Asthma Peak Month because kids have returned to school, and viruses are being passed around,” says Gailen Marshall, MD, PhD, allergist and President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI).1 “September also sees higher levels of environmental allergens like mold and ragweed. In addition, children may have stopped their regular asthma management routine over the summer. Generally, allergists see an increase in patients in September—more asthma attacks and more hospitalizations—especially in children.”
This past week, ACAAI released tips for parents to keep their children safe and treated against asthma in September. Pharmacists, use these tips to help patients be asthma aware.
