Kerr Drug, a community pharmacy that pioneered the training of clinical pharmacists to administer vaccines to patients, is launching an effort to meet the demand for flu shots. The company is beginning its flu shot campaign earlier than ever this year and providing vaccinations during operating hours at all its stores throughout North Carolina, with no appointments necessary.
“People only need to get one flu shot this year because the 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against the H1N1 as well as 2 other types of influenza expected to be seen during the season,” said Debbie Pruss, PharmD, a Kerr Drug pharmacist in Raleigh’s North Hills store. “We encourage everyone to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] new recommendations for flu vaccines, and with immunizations available during almost all operating hours, it has never been easier to get a flu shot.”
For the first time ever the CDC is recommending that everyone ≥6 months of age receive a flu shot. Previously, the agency recommended shots for more specific risk groups, such as the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. A CDC advisory committee approved the new guidelines, voting for “universal” flu vaccination in the United States to expand protection against the flu to more people. There is no separate vaccine available for people who just want a seasonal flu vaccine without the H1N1 component.
