Larry King, PharmD, discusses how pharmacy interoperability is working to create collaborative care and get pharmacists “in the game” as he says.

With the help of well-established pharmacy interoperability with other health care entities, pharmacists are able to utilize data more sufficiently, connect with patients and other providers more easily, and standout amongst other health care professionals.

Larry King, PharmD, Director of Product Safety & Performance at Surescripts, hosted a session at the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) 2025 Annual Conference, held May 5 to May 7 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Titled “Pharmacy Interoperability: Shaping the Future of Clinical Data Exchange – From Discussion to Action,” his presentation focused on the importance of pharmacist inclusion in interoperable health care initiatives.

After his presentation, Drug Topics caught up with King to dive deeper into his conference presentation and just how important pharmacists are in health care interoperability. From crucial data used to identify patient populations to the pharmacists’ role as a provider among nurses, physicians, and more, interoperability goes hand-in-hand with a well-connected collaborative care team.

According to his presentation, pharmacy interoperability is all about “moving dialogue to action.” Watch part 1 of our video with King and stay tuned for more from our conversation with him as he discusses the state and federal regulations that create challenges in interoperability.
