In the most recent episode of Over the Counter, Jay Holloway, PharmD, AAHIVP, discussed advancements in HIV, especially regarding the role of pharmacists.

Jay Holloway, PharmD, AAHIVP, started in the pharmacy profession at an independent location and eventually landed a role at Walgreens. Since making the move to California and focusing on LGBTQ+ advocacy, Holloway is now working as a staff pharmacist with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in a role that furthers their passion for helping underserved populations.

“Yes, it's important to take the ARVs (antiretrovirals), but if a person is like, ‘Well, I don't know where I'm going to sleep tonight or where I'm going to eat tonight,’ we need to focus to also address that need as well,” said Holloway.

When it comes to the ongoing public health issues surrounding HIV and AIDS, Holloway believes more needs to be done than simply providing medical care. Pharmacists are able to use their medication expertise—coupled with their forward-facing position as the community’s closest provider—to advance the industry’s authority on this disease.
