H.D. Smith has paid a $2 million civil forfeiture, agreed to modify its purchasing policies, and implemented a compliance program in return for federal authorities dropping all charges against the Illinois wholesaler. The indictment stemmed from a counterfeit Lipitor scheme, which led to the conviction of a former nonmanagement Smith employee. The firm says it now buys only directly from drug manufacturers and has implemented state-of-the-art security procedures.
