The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) has launched a Pharmacy Affairs Program that will focus on federal, legislative, and regulatory issues. The program was recently unveiled to attendees of FMI's annual Supermarket Pharmacy Conference in Chicago. The program is being funded by an initial group of 10 FMI members that have formed the FMI Pharmacy Affairs Council. The council, chaired by David Fong, Safeway's VP of pharmacy, is in the process of hiring a VP of pharmacy services. As the program develops, an independent stream of funding will be established so that the entire FMI pharmacy community can participate. The council is currently engaged in the following issues: AMP, DME, Tricare, dextromethorphan, drug pedigrees, and Medicare Part D. FMI's John Motley, senior VP /government and public affairs, and Deborah White, VP and associate general counsel, regulatory affairs, will head the new initiative until a VP of pharmacy is named.
