Jade Ranger, PharmD, discusses her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the first pharmacies to receive the COVID-19 vaccines.

In the challenging landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prescription Shoppe, a pioneering Black-owned pharmacy in Williamsburg, Virginia, emerged as a powerful example of community resilience and innovation. Founded before the global shutdown, the pharmacy not only survived but became a critical health care resource, demonstrating remarkable adaptability and commitment to patient care. Jade Rangers, PharmD, co-owner and pharmacists, highlighted their efforts, including hosting the first drive-through COVID vaccine clinic in their area, which became a pivotal point of community health care delivery.

The pharmacy's success story extends far beyond mere vaccine distribution, revealing the profound impact of representation and personalized health care. Many Black and brown patients specifically sought out the Prescription Shoppe due to the established trust and comfort level, recognizing the importance of health care providers who understand their community's unique experiences. By implementing strategic adaptations such as expanded delivery services, additional staffing, and comprehensive community outreach, the pharmacy transformed potential pandemic challenges into opportunities for growth and connection. The pharmacy's ability to pivot quickly, implement new standard operating procedures, and maintain a patient-first approach has not only ensured their survival but positioned them as a cornerstone of community healthcare. As they reach their sixth anniversary, the Prescription Shoppe stands as a powerful testament to the strength of community-focused health care providers who can adapt, innovate, and truly serve their patients during unprecedented times.

"I think a lot of times [when] people think of community independent pharmacy, they yhink of it as a dying breed," Ranger said. "I think it's one of those things where a lot of people had kind of forgotten about the integral role that we play in our communities, and I feel like COVID really kind of put that back on the map and back on the forefront."
