ASHP is urging the World Medical Association (WMA) to use pharmacists and other allied healthcare professionals more frequently as research investigators. In an Aug. 20 letter, ASHP executive VP/CEO Henri R. Manasse Jr. urged WMA to "reinforce that all health professionals" be involved in the research process and "adhere to the Declaration of Helsinki." The document outlines ethical principles for medical research involving human subjects. ASHP's comments also encouraged WMA to emphasize health literacy and risk communication as essential elements of informed consent and highlighted the importance of a full disclosure of potential conflicts of interest.
