Amazon Teams Up With Pharma Giants For Coupons On Branded Drugs

The new feature automatically applies manufacturer-sponsored coupons directly to an eligible patient’s order. So far, only a few pharma companies have made their coupons available through Amazon.

Amazon has teamed up1 with GSK, Kaléo, Novo Nordisk and Dexcom to integrate coupons for their brand-name medications. The new feature automatically applies manufacturer-sponsored coupons directly to an eligible patient’s order.

So far, just a handful of products are available with coupons, including:

  • GSK’s Trelegy (fluticasone furoate, umeclidinium & vilanterol), which treats patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Kaleo’s AUVI-Q (epinephrine), which is used treat allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
  • Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy (semaglutide), which is used to help adults lose weight
  • Novo Nordisk’s Saxenda (liraglutide), which also used to help adults lose weight
  • Dexcom’s G6 and G7 continuous glucose monitoring systems

Amazon notes that it will continue to work with manufacturers to add more coupon selection over time.

An Amazon spokesperson said the objective is to make it easier for customers to access available savings on the therapies they need to get and stay well. “We have integrated manufacturer coupons into the customer experience to help people easily find and apply available discounts, saving customers time and money,” the spokesperson told Formulary Watch. “In addition, customers may use their insurance to pay for medications, or pay with the Prime prescription savings benefit, which lets members access savings when paying without insurance for medications at Amazon Pharmacy.”

Some of the coupons work in connection with a member’s insurance, but coverage depends on that person’s plan, the spokesperson said.

When not using a coupon, Prime members can also access the Prime prescription savings benefit. This enables discounts of up to 80% off generic and 40% off brand-name medications at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide, including Amazon Pharmacy, when paying without insurance.

In addition, in January 2023, Amazon launched RxPass, a new Prime membership benefit from Amazon Pharmacy that offers generic medications that treat common health conditions. With RxPass, Prime members can receive multiple, eligible medications for a monthly fee of $5 and with free delivery.

Patients must have a Prime membership in order to access RxPass, and people with Medicare or Medicaid are not eligible, but they can still use their government insurance to fill prescriptions through Amazon Pharmacy. HSA or FSA cannot be used to pay for the RxPass subscription fee.
