A conversation with Sarah Thomas and David Skomo of HealthDyne at Asembia’s AXS25 Summit.

Pharmacy innovation is changing patient care through AI and automation. Sarah Thomas, vice president of sales and commercialization at HealthDyne, said she was able to reduce prescription processing from a day to 20 minutes in her pharmacy. This helped address patient leakage and treatment barriers. Technological advances can also aid patients in navigating complex healthcare systems. By using data insights similar to retail platforms, pharmacies can guide patients to the right medication and treatment options quickly.

The goal of utilizing AI and automation is to simplify healthcare access. Thomas said that patients shouldn't need extensive medical knowledge or experience to understand their treatment choices. AI tools can help pharmacists communicate more effectively, providing clear and direct support.

David Skomo, CEO at HealthDyne, said as technology evolves, pharmacies should look to leverage AI and data to improve patient care. This will make treatment selection and access more straightforward and patient-friendly.

Drug Topics® sat down with Thomas and Skomo at Asembia’s AXS25 Summit, held April 27 to May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, to discuss some of the most useful innovations that have been particularly helpful for pharmacies, key strategies to enhance access to care and affordability to patients, and how these technologies can help produce more personalized care for patients.

“We as an industry are certainly starting to look at some additional tools, like AI models for example, to help really ascertain what's in the best interest of the patient,” Skomo said. “I think that our pharmacy teams and our pharmacists understand what's best for the patient, but are not necessarily always good at communicating that. Patients sort of feel lost in the process. We can leverage some AI tools and provide patients with some direct online support and direction through options and channels like that, to ease some of that burden for the pharmacist and the pharmacy teams.”
