For Heartburn: Prilosec OTC

Omeprazole delayed-release tablets Manufactured by Procter & Gamble

Prilosec OTC contains omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid production. It blocks the acid-producing enzyme in stomach lining cells, providing relief from frequent heartburn by allowing irritated tissues to heal.

Clinical Pearls

  • The recommended oral dose for treating symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease absent esophageal lesions is 20 mg daily for up to 4 weeks.
  • Prilosec OTC should be ingested 30 to 60 minutes before meals. When taken twice daily, the first dose should be taken before breakfast and the second dose taken before dinner.
  • The capsule and tablet should be swallowed whole. However, if necessary, the capsule can be opened and mixed with 1 tablespoon of applesauce.

For Bloating: Gas-X Extra Strength Chewables

Simethicone 125 mg chewable tablets Manufactured by Haleon

Gas-X contains simethicone, an antifoaming agent that helps relieve bloating and discomfort caused by trapped gas. It works by breaking down gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, allowing them to combine and pass more easily through the digestive system. Gas-X provides fast, effective relief without being absorbed into the body.

Clinical Pearls

  • Adults and children 12 years or older should chew 1 or 2 tablets as needed after meals and at bedtime.
  • Patients should not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours except under the advice and guidance of a physician.
  • Gas-X does not have any serious adverse effects, although there have been reports of mild diarrhea and nausea.

For Overall Digestive Health: Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic Capsules

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG 40 mg Manufactured by i-Health

Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic Capsules contain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, a clinically studied probiotic strain that supports digestive health. It helps restore the natural balance of gut bacteria, promoting regularity, reducing bloating, and supporting overall digestive function.

Clinical Pearls

  • Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic Capsules should be taken once daily with or without food. However, during antibiotic use, 1 capsule should be taken twice daily and continued for 10 days after completion of the antibiotics.
  • Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic Capsules should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • If a patient misses a dose, it should be skipped. Patients should not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose.
